How to Protect Your Vehicle from Keyless Theft

The Growing Risk of Keyless Vehicle Theft

Keyless entry systems have made vehicles more convenient to use, but they have also introduced new security risks. Across the UK, increasing numbers of vehicles are being stolen without forced entry, broken locks or alarms sounding.

In many cases, owners only realise what has happened when they step outside to find their vehicle missing — with no obvious signs of how it was taken. This type of crime is known as keyless vehicle theft, and it is becoming increasingly common.

How Relay Attacks Work

Relay theft does not rely on traditional tools such as crowbars or lockpicks. Instead, criminals use electronic relay devices to intercept the wireless signal emitted by a key fob.

Typically, two individuals work together:

  • One positions themselves close to the property to capture the key fob’s signal from inside the home

  • The second stands near the vehicle with a relay device

  • The captured signal is amplified and transmitted to the vehicle, which is tricked into believing the key is present. The doors unlock and the engine starts as normal.

  • The vehicle can then be driven away quietly, often in a matter of minutes, without causing any visible damage.

How Widespread Is Keyless Theft?

This method of theft is no longer unusual.

According to the Crime Survey for England and Wales, between March 2023 and March 2024, 58% of vehicle thefts involved criminals exploiting keyless access systems.

Data from Tracker, Motor-Vision’s theft recovery partner, highlights how dominant this method has become. In August 2025, 98% of the thefts reported through their system involved keyless vehicles.

These figures show that relay attacks are now a major feature of vehicle crime across the UK.

The Impact on Vehicle Owners

The financial consequences of losing a vehicle can be significant, particularly where high-value cars, vans or specialist vehicles are involved. Replacement delays and disruption to daily life add to the stress.

However, many victims also report feeling unsettled by the nature of the crime. Because relay theft leaves no obvious signs of entry, it can feel intrusive and difficult to understand how it occurred.

Practical Steps to Reduce the Risk

Although no method offers absolute protection, there are several effective steps vehicle owners can take to reduce the likelihood of keyless theft.

Recommended precautions include:

  • Faraday pouches or signal-blocking boxes: These prevent key fob signals from being intercepted inside the home.

  • Physical deterrents such as steering wheel or pedal locks:  Visible security devices make vehicles harder and less appealing to steal.

  • CCTV systems and motion-activated lighting: Improved visibility around parking areas can discourage criminals.

  • Secure parking choices: Garages, locked gates or barriers can restrict easy access to vehicles.

  • Insurance policy checks: Confirm that your cover includes keyless theft and that you meet any security conditions required by your insurer.

Using multiple layers of security together provides stronger protection than relying on a single measure.

Insurance Considerations

Most comprehensive motor insurance policies include theft cover, but insurers increasingly expect owners of keyless vehicles to take reasonable precautions.

If security measures are ignored or keys are stored carelessly, claims may be delayed, disputed or reduced. Reviewing your policy and ensuring it reflects modern theft risks can help avoid complications later.

Motor-Vision can help ensure your cover remains appropriate for today’s vehicle technology and theft methods.

Staying One Step Ahead

Keyless entry systems are here to stay, but so are the risks that come with them. Awareness, sensible precautions and appropriate insurance cover remain the best defence.

By understanding how relay attacks work and taking steps to protect your vehicle, you can significantly reduce the chance of becoming a target.
