What to Do if a Driver Hits Your Car and Drives off

Essential Guide: How to Handle a Hit and Run Accident

It’s every driver’s nightmare: you’re parked up or waiting at the lights, when another vehicle smashes into yours, and then disappears without a word.

Hit-and-runs are sadly all too common across the UK, and under the Road Traffic Act 1988, failing to stop after an accident is a criminal offence.

Driver fails to stop after a collision

At Motor-Vision, we understand how stressful this can be and we’re here to help. Here’s a clear step-by-step guide of what to do.

Make safety your priority

  • Pull over safely and put on your hazards.
  • Check yourself, passengers, and anyone else nearby for injuries.
  • If there’s a blockage in the road or someone is hurt, call 999.
  • Don’t attempt to the other driver. It could put you in greater danger.

Gather as much info as possible

If the driver drives off, try to note:

  • Number plate (even partial helps)
  • Car make, model, and colour
  • Time, location, and the direction it went
  • Identifying features like company signage. stickers or dents

Also:

  • Take quick photos of your car and your surroundings
  • Save dashcam footage if you have it
  • Collect witness details if anyone saw the incident

Report to the police

Legally, you must tell the police within 24 hours if details weren’t exchanged. Call 101, report online at police.uk, or go to a station. Keep hold of the crime reference number as this is a key element for your insurance claim.

Call your insurer

The sooner your insurer knows, the sooner they can help. If you’re a Motor-Vision customer please give us a call on 01708 952 602 as soon as you possible can.

Even if the other driver isn’t found, your insurer can guide you through a non-fault claim and may work with the Motor Insurers’ Bureau to recover your losses. Learn more at mib.org.uk.

Being involved in a hit-and-run is stressful, but you’re not without support. Knowing what to do, and contacting your insurer quickly, ensures you get the help you need when it matters most.
