Britain's scariest classic cars

Rolls Royce Spooky Ghost

The Handpicked Horror Show on Wheels

A haunted house isn't the only thing that sends chills down your spine... Throughout the UK, there are plenty of spine-tingling legends on four wheels.

Whether it's their terrifying names, their scary styling, or the sheer horror of trying to keep them on the road, these are Britain's scariest classics(?). Continue if you dare...

1. Rolls-Royce's Ghostly Fleet

Before we get to the real horror... check out this iconic marque that actually wants to sound haunted. There are three Rolls-Royces that hint at the supernatural: Ghost, Wraith, and Phantom.

It wasn't by accident either. A smooth, whisper-quiet ride is what started the tradition in 1906 with the Silver Ghost. It was said to be so silent, it was “like a ghost.” And the tradition stuck.

2. Pure panic with the Reliant Robin

No discussion of scares would be complete without acknowledging the Reliant Robin. This plucky three-wheeler embodies British pride and precariousness.

The 1970s saw the arrival of this fibreglass, one-wheeled vehicle that wobbled into the hearts (and hospitals) of the british public.

It's included here because it's so visually entertaining and terrifying to drive. Is it reliable? Be sure that your will is up-to-date before taking a turn at high speed.

Is it iconic? Certainly!

3. The Austin Allegro: A Classic Case of 'What Were They Thinking

In our scary car hall of fame, the Austin Allegro has a special place. The reason for this is not because it looks beautiful (although it does), but because it could have been so much more.

Developed by British Leyland in 1973 (need I say more), it promised both innovation and style. The steering wheel was square, the trim rattled, and the reliability records were not good.

For this reason, it is our choice for peak unreliability. Despite being a nightmare for drivers, the Allegro is a dream for this list.

Of course, there was the incredible Allegro Vanden Plas, complete with its gigantic, gothic Rolls-Royce radiator! Could it be that it's so ugly that it's beautiful?

4. Fast-paced terror: The Jaguar XJ220

A 220mph V12 masterpiece was expected when the Jaguar XJ220 was announced. In its place, buyers were angered by the V6, which was expensive and unreliable.

As a result, there were lawsuits, a crashing market, and a reputation that still divides petrolheads today.

It may look fantastic today, but behind-the-scenes drama was horror movie material.

And last but not least...

5. The Ford Scorpio: The Marty Feldman of luxury saloons

Here's a different kind of terror. Even today, the Ford Scorpio, particularly its facelifted version from the mid-1990s, haunts design students.

It looked like something you'd find under your bed rather than a luxury saloon because of its bulging frog-like headlights, gaping grille, and melted jelly shape.

To be fair, it was comfortable and well-equipped. However, the styling remains... somewhat controversial.

What do you think?

Although this isn't a definitive list, we hope it will inspire you to come up with your own.

Lastly, as Nick Ross used to say at the end of 'Crime Watch':  ‘Please don’t have nightmares!’
